Mould Design Appreciation Print E-mail

Pre-requisites:

This course is appropriate for anyone involved in the management of new tooling purchases or tooling development projects and is especially suited to individuals who wish to reduce ongoing tool maintenance charges throughout the working life of the product being manufactured.

Aim of the course:

Attending the course will ensure that the delegates are more appreciative of the design, manufacture, proving and commissioning of new injection moulding tooling. In addition the course will explain the make-up of the industry and how it interfaces with the OEM, product designer and moulding organisations.

Who should attend:

Specifically designed to enhance the capabilities of staff contributing to new development projects and existing manufacturing using injection mould tooling. In particular:

  • Purchasing Personnel
  • Process Engineers
  • Production Managers
  • Tooling Design Engineers
  • Project Managers
  • Account Managers

    Objectives of the course:

The prime objective of this intensive course is to provide a thorough understanding of plastic injection mould tooling requirements and will cover the design methodologies and manufacturing processes of all the different configurations in use today. The programme will evaluate the different needs of prototype against high volume production tooling; from small parts through to very large components. Delegates will gain the ability to discuss tooling developments with external suppliers to reduce initial and subsequent maintenance cost implications.

On completion of the course the delegates will be able to:

  • Undertake mould strip-down and build-up exercises to evaluate design principles
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Hot Runner Design principles
  • Detail cooling requirements on future tooling development projects
  • Specify correct heat treatment process required to achieve acceptable mould life
  • Understand the implications of product design that requires a range of mould surface finishes
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of 3D solid geometry design techniques
  • Understand the route to manufacture requirements through CAD/CAM exposure
  • Conduct effective project planning and monitoring activities
  • Conduct more effective negotiations with external suppliers to reduce quoted charges
  • Recommend appropriate designs for prototyping and pre-production situations
  • Evaluate case studies from a variety of industrial applications
  • Contribute to future mould trialling exercises during handover from mould-maker to moulder

    Duration:

    3 days.

    Day one 9.30am - 4.30pm, Day two and three 9.00am - 4.30pm

    Outcomes:

Attending candidates will leave the course having heard the theory and been involved in ‘hands-on’ demonstrations of mould design, construction and assembly. They will also have discussed a very wide range of industrial situations and experiences that illustrate the key points being made throughout the course by the tutor.
