Product Design with Plastics Print E-mail

Pre-requisites:

The course is appropriate for anyone involved with the development of plastic parts and products, new design graduates as well as employed designers, being particularly suitable for more experienced staff who require a broad subject coverage to serve as an overview of related topics.

Aim of the Course:

Attending this course will ensure that designers are more able to contribute to the design process by becoming more aware of the ‘do’s and don'ts’ that are associated with the design of plastic products.

Who should attend:

Specifically designed to enhance the capabilities of staff contributing to design projects involving plastic materials. In particular:

  • Industrial Designers, Design Engineers, Project Managers, Project Development Managers.

    Objectives of the Course:

Focussing primarily on injection moulding, the prime objective of this intensive course is to provide an understanding of plastics moulded components, and impart a knowledge of plastics materials, their properties and characteristics. The programme addresses the value of the innovative use of plastics and industrial design and covers the design implications of the injection moulding process. Delegates will gain an appreciation of the knowledge and skills necessary to develop products from concept to production, minimising the effect of common difficulties.

On completion of the course the delegates will be able to:

  • Understand what is meant by innovative design with plastics and market driven developments
  • Follow a design process understanding the role of industrial design and teamwork
  • Recognise common manufacturing methods by evaluation of typical applications
  • Identify appropriate types of polymers for specific service conditions
  • Contribute to injection moulding tool design discussions and design parts accordingly
  • Utilise stress analysis and Moldflow software programmes to avoid common problems
  • Select appropriate assembly techniques and design jointing details accordingly
  • Recommend appropriate prototyping systems for both small and medium production quantities
  • Consider the implications for recycling plastic products after their life cycle has been exceeded
  • Evaluate case studies from a variety of industrial applications

Although no formal assessment is undertaken as part of the taught programme, attending candidates will only progress through a range of ‘hands on’ practical exercises using industry specification CAD room facilities once previous exercises have been completed to the satisfaction of the course tutor.

    Duration:

    2 days.
Day one 9.30am-4.30pm and Day two 9.00am-4.00pm

    Outcomes:

Attending candidates will leave the course having heard the theory but more importantly having seen a very wide range of samples that illustrate the key points being made throughout the course.

"I have recently attended the Product Design with Plastics course at PTL, which was of an exceptional standard. As a Industrial Designer I felt the course was highly intensive, covering a broad topic area including polymer selection, design for manufacture and mould design. The training staff were both friendly and knowledgeable" Gethin Roberts - The National Centre for Product Design & Development Research (PDR)

"The PTL Courses have been extremely valuable to Symphony, and we wish to run them on a regular basis. The in-house courses have been especially valuable, we operate in 40 countries and have a wide spectrum of distributors and agents. They come from different backgrounds and industry disciplines. Therefore the PTL courses have been an essential tool in providing education and backup for these people. Now we can be sure all our international colleagues are 'singing from the same hymn sheet'.

The courses for both existing and prospective customers have been equally effective. Using PTL has given a sense of credibility that a corporate exercise could not match. The events have been so  successful that a number of retailers have requested specialised 'me-only' courses for their staff members. The facilities, credibility and quality of presenters at the PTL courses are exemplary and prove a valuable educational, morale booster and sales tool for our company".
